Black tie means black tie, and at a gala the dress is expected to be long, considered, and quiet enough to let the occasion speak. These are our black formal styles — crystal and diamanté detail worked into floor-length silhouettes, appliqué across draped and fitted skirts, strapless and long-sleeve shapes, and structured bodices built to hold across a seated dinner and a long evening. Black is the default at this level of formality for a reason: it takes embellishment better than any other colour and it never looks like it is trying. If the invitation specifies white tie rather than black tie, go full-length, covered and unembellished — a different register entirely.
