The mini is the working definition of a cocktail dress: short enough to read as a night out, structured enough to hold its line from the first drink to the last. This is our largest cocktail edit — ruched and bandage shapes that need nothing but a heel, embellished and crystal pieces that carry the evening on their own, florals for warmer months, and long-sleeve minis for winter. Black runs deepest. Construction is what separates them: a ruched or bandage bodice moves with you rather than riding up, which is the difference between a dress you forget about and one you spend the evening adjusting. If the invitation is vague or the venue traditional, a midi is the safer read.
